Rather, as Dave puts it, “It's the result of our effort to build the most awesome-sounding, modern analog poly synth possible.” The Prophet-6 takes the best qualities of the original Prophet-5-true voltage-controlled oscillators, filters, and amplifiers-and adds enhancements such as studio-quality effects, a polyphonic step sequencer, an arpeggiator, and more.

But it's not simply a reissue of a classic. There's no mark on the control panel, and the wooden framework is also very clean. The Prophet-6 is Dave Smith's tribute to the poly synth that started it all-the Sequential Prophet-5. This Prophet-6 is in fantastic shape, sparingly played with pristine graphics. Toggling the Preset button also accesses the Prophet-6's Live Panel mode, where the sound reverts to the current settings of the controls, making this synth notably gig-friendly. There are 500 permanent factory programs, arranged in 10 banks of 100 programs each (with the ability to create and save up to 500 user programs). The knob-per-function top panel makes the Prophet-6 exceptionally easy to program, with near-instant access to all of its functions. There’s also a full-function arpeggiator, which can also be synced to external MIDI clock. The Prophet-6’s polyphonic step sequencer accommodates up to 64 steps and up to six notes per step, letting you build sequences polyphonically, with rests and external MIDI clock sync. Unison mode (featuring configurable voice count of 1-6 voices and key modes) is also present. As with its predecessor, the Prophet-6’s modulation sources are the Filter Envelope and Oscillator 2 (both with bi-polar control), and destinations include Oscillator 1 frequency, Oscillator 1 shape, Oscillator 1 pulse width, lowpass filter cutoff, and highpass filter cutoff.

One of the most revolutionary features of the Prophet-5 was the Poly Mod (Polyphonic Modulation) signal routing that feature is present here, too, with some modern enhancements to boot. There’s also a 100% analog, entirely independent stereo distortion effect. The effects are digital, with 24-bit/48kHz resolution, but true bypass maintains the pure-analog signal path. The dual effects section delivers studio-quality reverbs, delays (both standard and bucket brigade-style), chorus, and phase shifter. Voltage-controlled amplifiers complete the all-analog signal path. There are two discrete filters per voice-a four-pole, resonant, low-pass inspired by the original Prophet-5 filter, and a two-pole, resonant, high-pass filter.

Continuously variable wave shapes provide the tonal palette with triangle, sawtooth, and variable-width pulse waves. Other features include two discrete filters per voice a studio-grade, digital dual effects section onboard arpeggiator and step sequencer a knob-per-function top panel and a full-size, 4-octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and after touch.Ĭentral to the warm, punchy sound of the Prophet-6 are its two newly-designed, discrete voltage-controlled oscillators (plus sub-oscillator) per voice.

This 6-voice analog synth is just as dynamic and versatile as that original, much-beloved instrument.Īccording to Smith, “it’s not a reissue, it’s vintage with a modern twist ” with two discrete VCOs plus a sub oscillator per voice. This baby is lightly used, but fully functional, super clean and ready to blow your dang mind.ĭesigned by Sequential Circuits founder Dave Smith as a worthy successor to his groundbreaking analog polysynth, the Prophet-5,
